How much time do you take off work?

January 22nd, 2009 at 03:50 pm

An interesting development is going on at my workplace... one of our directors is on the radar as not being here very much. After looking at her absence record from when she started with us, she's taken a total of 96.5 days from Aug 06 - Nov 08 which includes all sick and vacation leave time... In this same time period, I have had 37.5 days out of the office. I guess I'm wondering if others out there ever track how much time they really take off work year after year.

I can calculate how much I took off since I know I get 6 weeks vacation yearly plus 10 personal/sick days, plus I forgot how many documented sick days and 10 holidays a year. Right now I have 9 vacation days left so I know that I take most of my vacation days. Life is meant to be lived at all stages, not just retirement.

I don't abuse sick days but stay home when I am sick or need to go to the doctor. I don't play hero and come to cough on everybody else.

Work/life balance is important, luckily my organization recognizes that.

I think we all have an internal "justification" clock allowing us to follow a pattern regarding taking time off work. I have noticed that everyone goes their life taking about the same amount of time off year after year...and those amounts vary a lot by individual.

My husband is self employed. I doubt if he takes off 10 days a year and that counts, saurdays, sundays and holidays. The only holiday he takes off is christmas. Once in a while in the summer, he will take sunday off to work in the yard. (He is a work aholic)

We get 21 flexible days additional to the holidays. If we do not use it, we lose it. We cannot cash it out.

Employee’s productivity is so much better when there are incentives.

I get 3 weeks + 1 day vacation, per years. As well as about 2 weeks sick time off every year (since having kids - LOTS of sick days). I used to take more mental health days, but hard to justify with as much as I am sick or the family is sick and I Am caring for them. Anyway, my boss pays for sick time and personal time at his discretion. It's just what I have averaged and I know it is on the high side.

My last job I would easily get 2 months off of the year BUT I was also working 80 hours a week a lot of the time. As a result, a 40-hour work week and 2 weeks vacation is plenty good for my well being. IT feels like easy street compared to my last job. The extra week vacation is nice with the kids. I earned it after 5 years here.

I get 4 weeks paid vacation. And last year, other than my vacation, I missed no days of work.

Conversely, my co-worker who gets 3 weeks paid vacation, in total missed 7 or 8 weeks of work. @@ And most of it was NOT due to illness. @@

I'd say I take about 100 - 120 hours of vacation per year. In addition to sickness used between 50 - 70 hours per year. I earn 8 sick time and 10 hours vacation per month. Conversely DW used on average about 100 to 120 hours hours similarly.

i am employed on a casual basis - my hourly rate is higher but i dont get any holiday or sick pay. so that means if i am sick or want a day off, i have to pay for it myself so to speak. luckily i am pretty healthy and have not had a day off due to sickness for about 2 years. i took three weeks off last year to visit my dad & family in another state last year, and probably another two weeks in individual days for weddings and music festivals. my boss doesn't mind as long as i give adequate notice. i also don't work public holiidays as I am too expensive.

this year I have only taken one day off so far and don't have another booked yet. it will be a 'crackdown year' for me with days off and holidays...

My hubby gets five weeks of paid vacation time per year. He has sick days he could take but I am thankful to say that he has not used a sick or personal day in years, and I do mean years!! I'm not sure but it somewhere around ten years that he has perfect attendence.

Not enough. I have days off during the week so I don't need to use my vac/sick day very often so at the end of the year I bank 40 hrs worth which equal last year to almost $700.

I get 4 weeks vacation time. In 2007, I used it all. In 2008, I used 3 days short of all. This year, I intend to use it all. I'll take a week in the spring, 2 weeks in the summer and a week in the fall.

Every 6 months, I come in an hour late one day for a doctor appointment and I will occasionally leave a bit early if there is something important happening like at my daughter's school or a family event. I also take off for a couple of religious holidays.

Other than that, I don't take any time. I haven't taken a sick day ever, I don't thnk. I've been there nearly 9 years. I have taken off when my wife had surgery and when my daughter was hurt in an accident. I've also taken off a couple of times for funerals.

Back when I had PTO I took every last minute. If I ever had defined PTO again, I would do the same. Why leave any of it on the table?

My company allowed us to use sick time to use for medical appointments and to care for sick family. There were always at least 10 occasions during the year where me, my husband, or my mom were ill or I had a medical appointment.

My love of travel and school volunteer commitments easily took care of my vacation and personal time.

These days, since I don't get paid for time off any more, I take less, but I haven't cut it out completely.

I'm still trying to figure out my paid time off at my new job! Right now I am building it up.
