School begins - New healthy initiative begins

January 5th, 2007 at 01:24 pm

Ok, yesterday's spending recap is just with DH paying $20 copay at the doctor and then another $5 at a store for books.

I got my syllabus, schedules, etc. for my classes. I skimmed through them last night and we'll just have to see how things work out. I hope signing up for 2 classes wasn't a mistake - especially since one of those classes is a statistics type course - yuck.

I just saw the "Super Size Me" show that you all are talking about and I am seriously rethinking our lifestyle too. We are victim to too much processed foods in our family. Even if it's not eating physically at the fast food joints, it's feeding the kids nuggets from the freezer, etc. I spoke with DH about it this morning and we agree that we need to get our family in our better health. Baby steps - as with any major change - is needed so we are going to start with cutting out the sodas for us, the grownups, and cutting out the ketchup for the kids. I know this sounds trivial, but you'd be surprised by the amount of sodas we drink and the amount of ketchup the kids put on everything...Then once we overcome those vices, we'll start another step of getting to eating better and healthier foods.

it's such a hard habit to break, and the food folks don't make it any easier!!!

with that said, i've followed a simple rule for about 3 years now: i avoid as much clear or white processed food as possible. pretty simple and really only includes white flour, white sugar, corn syrup of any sort, and plain table salt. i'll do wheat flour, raw sugar, honey molasses syrup etc, and sea or kosher salt instead.

when you start looking at labels and realizing how many convenience foods and beverages have those 4 ingredients, it's plain scary!!!

regular sodas are out, but diet or plain flavored soda water with a pack of splenda would work. most store-bought condiments are out, but these are easy to make on your own (and cheaper!). when it comes to actual foods like chicken nuggets, pizzas, burritos, etc it gets harder unless you're willing to pony up and buy organic.

or, try cutting up boneless skinless chicken breasts, breading and frying and freezing them up in a big batch. homemade chicken nuggets!

    good luck on your quest!

There are some organic ketchups out there, Muir Glen organics has one and Full Circle has one that don't have the junkiness of regular ketchup and its high fructose corn syrup and you need a lot smaller amounts of it than you do with junky ketchup. Just a heads up in case your kids howl about going no ketchup.
